Elaine Clarfield Gitalis

Elaine Clarfield Gitalis is a Canadian fine artist based in Toronto, Ontario. Graduating with honors in 1969 from The Ontario College of Art (OCAD), she majored in textile design and developed a deep passion for drawing and painting. She studied under notable artists such as John Newman, Hugh Mackenzie, Aba Bayevsky, Tom Lapierre, and Eric Freifeld.

 

Elaine's early career focused on the tactile quality of weaving, creating intricate wall-hangings and tapestries on various sized looms. She often used yarns dyed with natural materials and spun on an antique spinning wheel, adding a unique, organic element to her work.

 

In 1985, Elaine returned to her roots in drawing and painting. Alongside her painting practice, she taught individuals and numerous artist groups, including the Willowdale Artists Group, Markham Group of Artists, and the Toronto Watercolour Society. Many of her students have gone on to become successful professional artists.

 

Elaine was a founding member of the Thornhill Artists Studio Tour, where her studio became a popular stop, and she was consistently one of the top-selling artists.

Eventually, Elaine retired from teaching to focus solely on her own work. Today, she dedicates her efforts to exploring new inspirations and translating them into series of paintings that reflect her evolving artistic vision.

 

Elaine Clarfield Gitalis continues to create compelling and innovative art, drawing from her extensive background in textile design and her passion for painting and drawing. Her work remains a testament to her dedication and creativity in the Canadian art scene.
