Gravitational Pull
Artist: Alex Mayhew (LEX)
“I don’t make changes to confuse anyone. I’m just searching. That’s what causes me to change. I’m just searching for myself.”

David Bowie
Gravitational Pull delves into the cyclical nature of identity, time, and memory. This kinetic artwork responds to the viewer’s movement, echoing David Bowie’s continual process of self-reinvention. At its centre is a container on Bowie’s forehead, where symbolic objects—representing memories and cues—dynamically shape his identity in real-time. As viewers move through space, these objects shift, illustrating Einstein’s theory of space-time, while gravity causes circular elements to rise, conceptually linking them to moments from Bowie’s life. Inspired by Bowie’s “Width of a Circle,” the piece symbolizes the gravitational pull of identity, with each transformation part of a continuous, fluid, and ever-evolving loop.
